Trophy Time!
You may be very excited after reading the title to this post because you've been eager to see how my San Marcos Rec League basketball season turned out. Well, there is reason for excitement, but not enough to call parents, grandparents, siblings and friends about. Yet worthy enough to blog about it.
Tonight was the championship game. It came down to "Sunfresh Floral" (my team name, don't ask why) and "Old & Slow." Sunfresh Floral was comprised of six players, 2 of them 45 years old and up, the rest of us between the ages of 22 and 26. Old & Slow was comprised of no one under the age of 40. Strange that two teams with men in their 40's and up make the championship game.
Tip-off was at 6:30 on Tuesday night. The game got off to a slow start with the score at halftime 18-17 in favor of Sunfresh Floral. The 2nd half was very similar as far as style played. We tried to keep the game up-tempo because we were younger and in better shape. However, only having 1 substitute hindered our style of play. Old & Slow played zone defense for all but 4 possessions (which we scored on each time) and played consistent, smart basketball. Midway through the 2nd half they went on a scoring streak, making difficult shots and playing good defense. Sunfresh Floral did not respond too well. The lead changed hands several times, but we were unable to match their baskets. We fell behind by as much as 3 points and then we had to resort to fouling to get the ball back.
Final score of the game was 54-45 on the scoreboard. However, I'm only counting that they scored 52 points on us. When there is 3 seconds left and we have accepted defeat and started shaking hands, its quite uncooth for the short asain guy on the other team to shoot a lay-up just so he said he scored a basket. Pretty cheap if you ask me.
We did come home with some hardware tonight. One plaque is "Post Season Finalist" and the other is "Second Half (of the season) Champions."
