Back in the Game

Last night marked my return to competitive basketball.

San Marcos 'B' league basketball.

We fielded a team of unique individuals. The Faber family, Lyle and sons Luke, Aaron and Reuben. The Veldkamps, Arnie and son Mark, Chris Kuperus and myself.

We played a team of not-quite-middle-aged to middle-aged-men. Evidently, one player on the other team was quite the basketball player back in his day. Not quite at the pro level, but word is he came close. Still pretty dominant for being in his 40's, pure shooter and solid footwork in the middle.

As for my return to the sport...dare I call it a lifestyle? I had a smooth first half. I was quick, I could actually dribble the ball, had a smooth release and played solid defense.

The second half was a completely different story. I was slow, had trouble with turnovers, couldn't hit anything besides a layup and had the form of a first time shooter. Bad news.

Our first half lead was enough for the victory. They got close, but we we were able to keep the lead. It came down to us shooting freethrows and them missing shots. This was probably the oldest team we'll play. All the others will be younger and more athletic but not near as good as shooters as last nights team.

Our next game is next Tuesday. That leaves pleny of time to recover from a second half of resting my hands on my knees trying to catch my breath, walking up the court and playing half-donkey defense against guys old enough to be my dad.

Game 2 was Tuesday night. We once again were victorious over the competitor. This team was quicker and but lacked basic fundamentals of basketball, I scoffed at them many times.
